For the past two weeks, I spent time in the Bluefield Behavioral Pavilion. The Pavilion is meant for those who struggle with mental illness and drug addiction. Most of the patients there are there for a multitude of reasons, usually including MDD (Major Depressive Disorder), psychosis, and anxiety disorders just to name a few.

The Pavilion is an amazing place to go if you are having severe mental issues. The staff treats you as like you’re an actual person, and the counselors do what it takes to make your stay there as painless as possible. However, it isn’t a hotel you can just stay at.

Before you’re accepted at The Pavilion, you have to first get medical clearance at your local hospital. It usually takes a few hours for the tests to come in and then you’ll get a ride in an ambulance. Once you arrive, you get taken to a room, where they take your shoestrings and remove any strings in your clothing for precautions. Depending on what time you arrive at The Pavilion, you can do a variety of things. If you arrive at in the morning, you will first breakfast. Then, you will have the morning counselling and after group, the cleaning staff will have to clean the day room that you stay in during the day if you aren’t in your room. Since I’m on the topic of rooms, your room will be a shared room, as in you’ll have a roommate. That part isn’t so bad because most, if not all, the people who are put in there are nice, kind people.

A little after group, you’ll have activities. That can be really entertaining because the person who does the activities usually brings the radio. That radio is a godsend because you can’t have music during your stay at The Pavilion. After the activities there is usually lunch. After lunch there is the last community group therapy and then dinner. After dinner, there’s last activities. There is a phone you can use, but there are restrictions. My last trip there, they were trying to revise it some. However, I believe that the people at The Pavilion are the greatest part of it.

Having people there who know the feeling you’re feeling and the pain you’re feeling makes you feel as if you really aren’t alone. Sometimes it feels as if the entire world is against you, but having someone that stays by your side and knows that you’re going to struggle and still chooses to stay with you…It feels amazing. The people that are in there are amazing and will make your stay there so much better. Those people there, staff and patrons, make the stay there so much better. My stay was not a bad stay and I know that if I need to go back, they’ll greet me with open arms.
